About Bunratty United

1

Bunratty United AFC, nestled in the seaside town of Schull, West Cork, was founded in 1987 when a group of local players decided to join the West Cork League. Val Duffy, the then owner of the Bunratty Inn bar and restaurant, kindly offered sponsorship so with Val Duffy, Martin Briscoe and Mick Barnett involved,Bunratty United was established.

Within four years, the Junior Men’s team progressed from the Third to the First Division and a second team, Under 18’s, was formed.

The first major success the club enjoyed was winning the Beamish Cup in 1994. That was the first of four such victories, coupled with five Premier League Championships.

Since then, leagues and cups have been won by all of the underage teams. This is one of the most satisfying aspects of the club, seeing the kids come together and enjoy playing soccer, building friendships and learning the importance of teamwork.

Backed by a supportive local community, Bunratty United AFC has continued to grow and build upon our founding success and today we have nearly 200 active members including three non competitive and four competitive underage teams, with players joining as young as four. We have two strong adult teams in play this year, Under 19s and Junior men, so the future of Bunratty United looks bright.

Danny Logan – Chairperson

Danny, a Schull native and Manchester United Supporter has been involved with Bunratty prior to its establishment in 1987 when it was Schull Soccer Club; Danny is now involved in coaching. He is also involved with the WCSSL & ETP squad and is the registrar of the WCSSL.

Des O’Brien – Child Welfare/Covid Officer

Des has three children who have come or are coming through the ranksat Bunratty, each starting at 6 years old. With tens of thousands of kilometers on the clock going to games and trainings from Mizen to(almost) Malin and most places in between he can say not a single onewas wasted. He is the club's Children's Officer and is excellent atputting out corner flags.

Lynda Whelton – Public Relations Officer

Lynda is originally from Castletownbere, and moved to Schull in 1995. She always had an interest in sport, playing football, basketball and cross country running in her youth. She got involved with Bunratty United in 2017 while her two sons were playing underage soccer. You would be sure to hear her supporting on the side-line! Lynda started off by helping out in the Bunratty United AFC Summer Soccer Camps then getting involved in the fundraising committee, and is now PRO.

Brendan Drinan – Secretary

Brendan Drinan joined Bunratty United AFC as a coach to the U8 when his son and daughter started to play in 2018; he is now coaching. Brendan was recently appointed to the role of secretary and he’s relishing his new role in the Club. He would encourage any adult/parent to get involved in community organisations, as there is great personal satisfaction in seeing the young players grow and develop their skills and talents. He believes that Bunratty United makes an immeasurable contribution to the local community and volunteerism is key to that.

Samantha O’Reilly – Treasurer

Sam, origionally from South East London, and a Crystal Palace supporter moved to West Cork in 2000. She got involved with Bunratty United in 2012 as PRO when her son was playing underage soccer and there was no one available to organise team hoodies. After much convincing she took on the role as treasurer in 2016. Since then, she has organised an online club shop, moved membership and soccer camp payments online, and has successfully applied for many grants for the club. And has got involved with the girls team too as her daughter also enjoys playing.
